What “1/20 12K GF” on jewelry actually means
1/20 12K G.F. is gold filled, not 12k gold. U.S. rules require a mechanically bonded layer of at least 10k gold that is at least 1/20 of the metal weight. Fine gold in that piece is about 2.5 percent.
1/20 12K GF (or 1/20 12K G.F.) is one of the most common stamps on American estate jewelry. It is also one of the most misread.
It does not mean the piece is 12 karat gold. It means a layer of 12k gold was mechanically bonded to a base-metal core, and that layer is supposed to be at least one-twentieth of the metal weight. Filled vs plated vs solid. Karat vs fineness.
The U.S. rule, in plain English
The Federal Trade Commission’s jewelry guides (16 CFR 23.3) say you may call a piece gold filled only when:
- the gold layer is applied by a mechanical process (heat and pressure, not a quick electroplate), and
- that layer is at least 10 karat, and
- that layer is at least 1/20 of the weight of the metal in the article.
If the layer is thinner than 1/20, the honest mark is rolled gold plate, RGP, or gold overlay, with the fraction written out — for example 1/40 12K RGP. The FTC’s consumer page on buying gold jewelry says the same thing in shorter words.
HGE, HGP, GP, “gold tone,” and “gold flashed” are plate. There is no 1/20 promise. Most of those have no gold bid.
The arithmetic people skip
12k gold is 12/24 = 50% fine gold.
On a piece marked 1/20 12K GF:
- 5% of the weight is 12k gold
- 50% of that 5% is fine gold
- fine gold in the whole piece is about 2.5%
A 1/20 14K GF piece is about 5% × (14/24) ≈ 2.9% fine gold.
That is why a shop will not pay 12k melt on a 1/20 12K bracelet. The stamp already told you the gold is a skin. Why the offer felt low. Weigh and test.
A 1/10 12K or 1/10 14K mark is a thicker layer. Still filled. Still not solid.
How this connects to pocket watches
American pocket-watch cases often skip the fraction and stamp Guaranteed 20 Years or Guaranteed 25 Years instead. That year grade is the same idea: a gold skin meant to last. Pocket watches. Some shops will not buy filled at all.
What the shop does
We look at the stamp. We still test. Stamps get faked, worn off, or put on the wrong repair. A file crater that shows brass is the old-school tell. XRF reads the surface and can lie if the layer is still intact — that is why a decent shop uses more than one test. XRF, acid, Sigma.

Is gold filled real gold? There is real gold in the layer. The piece is not a gold bar.
Is 1/20 12K worth melting? Sometimes, in bulk, at a filled rate. One bracelet is often a shrug. Ask. Do not assume 12k jewelry prices.
