Hollow gold chains: gold with air in the middle

A hollow chain is still gold. It looks heavy and is not. The shop pays the weight of the wall, not the jewelry-store thickness. Crushing, kinks, and a tube at the break are the tells.

A hollow chain is still gold. It is just gold with air in the middle.

Jewelers draw or form karat gold into a tube so a rope or herringbone can look thick without using solid ounces. It photographs like a heavy chain. It is not. The shop pays weight, not the look. 10k / 14k / 18k. Broken chains.

How you can tell

  • It crushes in a pocket or a jewelry box
  • It kinks and will not lie flat
  • A break shows a tube, not a solid wire
  • It feels light for its size

That is hollow, not a fake. A fake is a different problem. Filled vs plated vs solid. 1/20 12K GF.

Why the bid feels small

You remember the jewelry-store price of a fat rope. The scale sees a thin wall of 10k or 14k. Solder at the joins can be a lower karat. A steel clasp is not gold. Magnetic clasps. Why the offer felt low.

Weigh and test in front of you. Ask for karat and pennyweight or grams on the ticket. Tests.

Leave it alone

Do not smash it at home to “prove” it. Do not stretch it back into shape. Bring it as it is. We will weigh what is there.

Hollow is still a melt job when it tests karat. It is just less metal than the picture in your head.

Rope, herringbone, and “Italian” chains

A lot of the hollow we see is rope and herringbone sold as Italian gold in the 1980s and 1990s. The pattern looks expensive. The wall is thin. Herringbone is the one that folds into a V and never sits right again. That crease is not a shop trick. It is how a hollow ribbon fails.

Solid rope exists. It is heavy in the hand. If you are not sure, do not guess from a photo. Weigh and test.

What is not a hollow-gold bid

Gold-filled and plated chains can look thick too. The stamp and the test sort them. 1/20 12K GF. A magnet on the clasp is usually just the clasp.

People also ask

Is hollow gold real gold? If it tests 10k or 14k, yes. There is just air in the middle.

Why did the jewelry store charge so much? You paid for labor, brand, and the look of thickness. The shop buys metal.

Should I repair it first? Almost never, not if you plan to sell it as scrap.
