Stolen metal, police holds, and why a shop might say “not today”
Secondhand metal laws exist because theft is real. A hold or a declined buy is not a verdict on your soul. It is how a shop stays open.
If a shop pauses a buy, asks more questions, or says they have to hold an item, they are usually following a law or a hard lesson.
Stolen gold looks like regular gold. That is the problem.
What you can do
Bring ID. Bring a story that matches the metal. Invoices help. Receipts. ID.
If they decline, ask why. Sometimes it is “this looks like a reported piece.” Sometimes it is “we do not buy this category.” Either way you still own it unless a cop says otherwise.
What not to do
Do not get loud about “I pay taxes.” Do not offer to take less to skip the ID. That combination makes everyone more interested, not less.
Purchase holds are a shop-side tool. From your side: delays are annoying and still better than a shop that buys anything with a wink.
