Should you sell gold when the number on TV is huge?
High prints do not mean “dump everything.” They mean the spread is real, the crowd is loud, and you should decide what the metal was for before you react.
Every time gold prints a number that makes the news, the same two people walk in.
One has been stacking for years and wants to take some chips off the table. That is a plan.
The other saw a thumbnail and wants to sell everything today because they are sure this is the top. That is a feeling. Feelings are allowed. They are not a strategy.
The number on TV is not your number
The ticker is spot. You do not get spot. You get spot minus the shop’s bid, minus the product’s personality.
A common eagle is close to melt. A weird high-premium coin you bought from a commercial is not. Premiums and spreads and why buy and sell prices differ.
If you bought at a panic premium last cycle, a “record high” can still be a disappointing sale. That is not the shop cheating you. That is the premium coming back out.
What high prices actually change at the counter
- More metal walks in. Spreads can widen because the shop is taking more risk and more cash out the door. Spreads when markets go crazy.
- More fakes walk in. Testing gets slower. Tungsten bars are not a myth.
- Cash on hand matters. Call ahead on a large sale. Large cash sales.
- ID and cash-reporting rules do not take a holiday. Why they asked for your ID.
A calmer question than “is this the top?”
Ask: what was this metal for?
- Emergency money → selling some when you need the money is the point
- A long holding → selling a slice to rebalance is adult
- A bet you would time the exact high → nobody at this counter has a trophy for that
Selling some is a decision. Selling all of it in a sweat because a man on TV used the word “historic” is how people sell the bottom of the next dip too.
If headlines have you wanting to buy everything today, that is the other side of the same coin: panic buying after headlines.
A practical way to do it
Decide a number of ounces, not a mood. Get a bid. Walk away overnight if you need to. Spot will move. That is the product.
Do not clean anything. Do not drive around town leaking that you have a sack of gold in the trunk. Transporting metal.
