A lot of it is white gold — yellow gold alloyed and plated to look white. The plate wears. The karat is still the karat. 10k / 14k / 18k. Tests.

What the shop does on a white ring

If it is white gold, we pay the karat. If it is platinum, we pay platinum if we buy platinum. If it is tungsten, we say so. Hallmarks help and still get copied. PT, PLAT, 950, 900 are platinum language. 14K WG is not.
