Carson City: the CC mint mark
CC is Carson City, Nevada. A small mint. A loud mint mark. Most CC coins are collected. Not every CC is a lottery ticket. Look under the wreath on a Morgan.
CC is Carson City, Nevada. The mint opened in 1870 to coin Comstock silver. It closed as a mint in 1893. The building is a museum now.
The mark is two C’s. On a Morgan dollar it sits below the wreath on the reverse. Where is the mint mark?.
Why people get loud
Carson City was small. Mintage on many dates is low compared with Philadelphia. A CC Morgan is a collected coin even when it is not the rarest CC. The GSA holders from the 1970s Treasury sales are part of that story. A common CC in a GSA box is still a CC.
It is not automatically a retirement. Morgan keys. Old is not rare.
Other CC coins
Gold exists. Seated silver exists. Those are their own books. A shop will look. A Facebook “I found a CC” post will not grade it.
What to do
Do not clean it. Do not pry a GSA holder apart at the kitchen table. Bring the coin. Don’t clean. When to slab.
