Canal Zone tokens and PX chits: not coins, not balboas
The Canal Zone spent US dollars. Commissary, club, and PX tokens were for a counter, a drink, or a bus. Most common brass pieces are modest. Do not mix them with Panama silver balboas.
The Canal Zone used US paper and US coins. What people bring in stamped Canal Zone, Commissary, PX, or good for 5¢ is a token. It is not a Panama balboa. It is not a dime.
Workers, soldiers, and families used tokens at the commissary, the club, the soda fountain, the bus. David Plowman’s catalogs list well over a hundred Canal Zone military pieces. That is a specialist series. A common brass drink token is a few dollars if someone wants it. A scarce club or early company piece is different.
PX and club chits everywhere
The same drawer often has Post Exchange tokens from other bases — NCO club, beer, laundry, bus. Aluminum and brass. “Good for.” They are exonumia. Most common PX chits are a bulk token bid. Named, scarce, or early Canal Zone pieces we will pull and price as tokens, not as coins.
What they are not
They are not MPCs. They are not emergency dollars. They are not 90% silver halves from Panama. If the box has both tokens and silver balboas, that is two conversations. World coins.
Do not polish the brass. Bring the envelope they came in. The printing on a paper chit is the whole object.

How the Zone was paid
From 1904 until the Zone wound down (treaties in 1977, handover 1999), the official money was the US dollar. Tokens filled the holes a dollar coin does not: a 5¢ drink, a bus fare, a club due. Early French-company vulcanite pieces (1880s, Compagnie Universelle) are a different, scarce series. Most of what we see is mid-century brass.
