Pocket watches: most are gold filled. “25 year” is the tell.
Most estate pocket watches are gold filled, not solid gold. A 10-, 20-, 25-, or 30-year guarantee on the case usually means filled. Some shops will not buy filled at all.

Most of the ones that come across a U.S. coin-shop pad are gold filled — a layer of karat gold bonded over brass. Very few estate pocket watches are solid 10k or 14k all the way through. Sellers almost never know that. They see yellow metal, a pretty hunter lid, and a family story. The shop sees a case company and a year-guarantee.

The “25 year” mark is the filled tell
If the dust cover or inner lid says 10 year, 20 year, 25 year, or 30 year guaranteed, that is the filled tell.
People hear “guaranteed 25 years” and think the watch is solid gold with a long warranty. It means the factory promised the gold skin would last that long before it wore through. Illinois Watch Case Co. (Elgin), Fahys, Wadsworth, Keystone, Essex, and others used those year grades as a product line. “Empire,” “The Winner,” Avalon, and similar names are case grades, not karat stamps.

Solid cases say 10K, 14K, or 18K. They do not brag about a 25-year plate. If you see both a karat mark and a year guarantee, read the whole case. Year-guarantee cases from those American case companies are filled unless a real karat mark says otherwise and a test agrees.
When the layer wears, you see dull brass at the bow, the hinge, and the high spots. That is not dirt. That is the core.
Some shops will not buy filled
The recovery is tiny. The time is not. A polite no is not a trick. Other shops will bid a small filled number, or they will buy the movement if it is a name they can use and treat the case as scrap of a kind they barely want.
Ask which kind of shop you walked into. Pawn shop vs coin shop. Traveling “we buy gold” tables will often blend a filled case into a “gold watch” number you cannot unpick.

The movement is a second conversation
Waltham, Elgin, Hamilton, Illinois (the watch company, not just the case company), a Swiss name — those can add something if the movement is complete and collectible. Most estate pocket watches add nothing once the case is filled. A pretty engraving on a filled hunter lid is decoration, not ounces.
Do not service it first hoping to get that money back. Do not polish the case. Don’t clean is the same rule in a different metal.
