Insurance appraisals vs a shop bid: pay for the paper you actually need

A written replacement value is a paid document. A cash bid is an offer. Do not ask for the first and expect it to be the second, for free.

A guide book is not an insurance policy or a check

“Can you write down what this is worth for my insurance?”

Yes, if that is a service they offer. Yes, it often has a fee. No, that number will not match a cash bid. Appraisal vs cash bid.

Replacement

What it would cost to buy another one at retail in a reasonable time. Higher.

Cash bid

What they will pay today. Lower. Why spreads exist. Bid and ask.

If you only need a rider

Ask your insurer what they accept. Sometimes photos plus invoices are enough. Sometimes they want a formal appraisal. Do not surprise a busy Saturday counter with 400 coins and “just jot a total.” What to bring. Estates. Receipts.
