Pawn shop vs coin shop: same metal, different job
Both will weigh gold. Only one lives in this market every day. Know which counter you are standing at before you get mad at the number.
A pawn shop will buy gold. A jewelry store will buy gold. A coin shop will buy gold. Those are not the same store with different signs.
If you walk into the wrong one with the wrong expectation, you will leave angry at the honest number.
What a pawn shop is for
A pawn shop is a loan against stuff, with a side business of buying things they can resell to whoever walks in next. Metal is one drawer. Guitars are another. They may have a good scale and a good tester. They may not have a Greysheet, a junk-silver formula, or a collector who wants your 1909-S VDB.
They are fast. They are often cheaper on collector coins. They can be fine on obvious scrap. That is not an insult. It is the job.
What a coin shop is for
A coin shop lives in spot, melt, and collector demand. The board on the wall is the business. They buy junk silver by face. They know which Morgan is common and which one is not. They will still lowball a cleaned coin, because the next collector will. See don’t clean the coins and why the offer felt low.
They are not automatically “nicer.” They are more specialized. Specialists pay more when they can resell to specialists. They pay melt when it is melt.
Jewelry stores
A jewelry store is often best at fashion gold and diamonds they actually sell. They can be weak on coins. They can be strong on a broken 14k chain. A coin shop is the reverse more often than people think.

How to choose in ten seconds

- Broken chains, class rings, dental gold → whoever tests in the open and shows the math
- One weird rarity you already know is a rarity → coin shop, or a real auction house, not the first pawn window
- You need a loan, not a sale → pawn. That is what they are built for.
