Eisenhower, Susan B. Anthony, Sacagawea, and presidential dollars: modern dollar coins
Why modern dollar coins never fully replaced the paper dollar, what the major types are, and how shops treat common examples.
The United States kept trying large dollar coins after silver dollars left daily life: Eisenhower dollars, Susan B. Anthony dollars, Sacagawea/Native American dollars, and Presidential dollars. Most never displaced the paper dollar in vending and pockets the way designers hoped.
Ike dollars
Big, clad (with silver collector versions), and common in many dates. Collector interest concentrates on better condition and silver issues — not every Ike in a drawer.
SBA and later small dollars
Smaller format tried to modernize. Public confusion with quarters hurt adoption. Many are face value in worn condition; some varieties are collected.
Shop stance
We do not treat modern clad dollars as bullion. Silver-clad specials are different. Sort honestly; do not assume “big coin” means “silver.”

Vending machines, cash drawers, and public habit favored paper dollars. Dollar coins remain useful for collectors, casinos in some eras, and government accounting experiments, but they are not a secret silver stack. When an Ike is 40% silver collector material, that is a different product than a clad business strike — learn the edge and the series before pricing.
